Symbolism and Patterns as Structures of Life

It’s pretty easy to look around and see that patterns are everywhere ~ in plants, buildings, seasons, rocks. The universe makes good use of patterns in creation! There are patterns in the events and experiences of our lives as well.

Symbols and metaphors are prevalent in stories, dreams and religions — and all around us if we pay attention. Recent developments in cognitive science propose that *everything* we perceive is metaphorical representations of information.

In this class, we will look at modern theories of perception, non-verbal communication, wisdom lineages, shamanism and more to get familiar with how to recognize and read symbols and patterns, then explore how they show up in our own lives.

We will have some practice to identify symbols and patterns, and take an inventory of what we recognize in our personal experiences. Then we will start to identify our unique relationships to these symbols, metaphors and patterns and what they mean to us.

Developing this skill and this library helps us understand ourselves and communicate with the world, “seen” and “unseen.”

This is not based on any particular religion or system of interpretation, but rather explores what is in use and what we relate to.
